WordClouds: 16 tips to use WordClouds in languages. A special gift for Mrs Hamdy and her students at Springbrook High School, Silver Spring, Maryland. I hope your students find them useful Mona.
- Write a story using the words.
- Create descriptive word clouds to cover descriptions of themes, characters in a reading or novel. (6th form and A Level).
- Use word clouds to brainstorm ideas and concepts.

- Assess learner knowledge by having them create word clouds.
- Create a word cloud and have students create a story from what they see in the cloud. They can then make a word cloud of their own story.
- Put words in a word cloud that will be part of spelling tests, reading, writing, speaking and listening activity.
- Have students create a word cloud that highlights the countries of the Arab World.
- Have students create a word cloud of important words they have learned.
- Put both the English and Arabic word into a word cloud. Have students find a way to connect the words. This could be redoing the Wordle with a tilde between words so the go together. It could be colour coding the words using the advanced edit feature. Perhaps they just draw lines between them.
- Create a word cloud of introductory words for discussion by students in class.
- Have students create a word cloud of food/clothing etc… items from the a country in the Arab World.
- Put your lesson plan into a word cloud to create a word cloud of what you will be learning about.
- Entire class creates a word cloud in reaction to a topic.
- Create a class word cloud that highlights class expectation. This can be done by students.

Ideas for using WordClouds
WordClouds are beautiful and fun to work with, and the students love them. Initially you could ask the students "What is the WordCloud about?" You could then generate some comprehension questions and ask the students to use the WordCloud, in pairs, and answer the questions. For higher thinking order, students can generate comprehension questions for their peers. WordClouds can also be used as prompts and aid for speaking, writing and listening activities.
